SURESHOT UNDER 18 WOMEN NATIONAL CUP FINAL

HARINGEY ANGELS 68
MANCHESTER MYSTICS 45

MVP - Mary Durojaye (14 points, 12 rebounds)

In an MVP-earning performance of 14 points and 12 rebounds, Mary Durojaye helped Haringey Angels dethrone 2007 winners Manchester Mystics 68-45 in the Women’s Under 18 Sureshot National Cup Final on Sunday.

Held as part of the Women’s Day of Basketball 2008 at Nottingham’s Wildcats Arena, the Angels won each of the four quarters to repeat the success they had against Manchester in last year’s RAF Final Fours Under 18 playoff final.

As is often the case, Angels’ big girls were dominant on the boards out-rebounding Manchester 50-29 on the day. Haringey also shot well from the floor at a shade under 50% compared to Mystics’ lowly 28.8%.

Manchester’s situation was not helped as England and Great Britain international Georgia Jones was restricted to 6 minutes after going down with an injury in the first quarter – later discovering she had suffered a broken hand. Jones had started well, hitting all 3 of her shots for 7 points in limited minutes.

Jones’ team mate Kelsey Bardsley, however, stepped up in absence of the star guard to keep Manchester in the game scoring a game-high 22 points in an attempt to keep pace with the London team.

Bardsley and the remaining Mystics team did a fair job, being only 8 down at half time, but a 38-23 second half for Angels was too much for Manchester to contend with and the London team were left hoisting the Cup.

Durojaye was one of three Angels in double figure point totals, joined by Mrashi Karumba (16) and Renee Johnson-Allen (10).

Semi Final
Haringey Angels (22, 37, 50) 73

Southend Swifts (13, 31, 47) 63

Leading 7-6 after the opening exchanges, the Southern Champions displayed their greater physical strength as they edged away to lead by nine at the end of the first - a lead which could have been considerably greater were it not for four outstanding blocked shots by Swifts' Jane Barclay.

Southend, however, raised their defensive effort from the start of the second quarter, restricting their opponents to just four points in over six minutes, as they closed the gap to two points, 26-24. Haringey regrouped, to edge away again, but the margin was just six points at the half.

With renewed confidence, the Swifts stunned Haringey in the third, as they stormed back to take their first lead of the game, with 3:26 to play, opening a 43-47 advantage. The Angels, however, regrouped with Mrashi Karumba prominent, taking the last seven points of the quarter, to lead by three.

Still Southend fought back, closing the gap to one, with the first basket of the fourth, but Haringey remained steady, despite having Kashmere Joseph rested on four fouls, pulling out a seven point advantage, 56-49. The Swifts were forced into fouling to stop the clock, but the Angels remained cool at the stripe, as they kept alive their dreams of a Championship treble.
Final

Manchester Mystics (12, 28, 42) 60

Haringey Angels (16, 33, 47) 66

In a stirring Final, Haringey weathered a late fightback by Manchester to clinch their third Final Four Championship in a row.

Manchester began the game more strongly, leading 10-8 after the early exchanges, but Haringey were doing a good job of denying Georgia Jones space to either shoot or drive, and a 2-8 spurt to close the quarter gave the Angels the edge.

Two "3"s from Kelsi Bardsley and one from Charlotte Stoddart kept Mystics in contention during the second quarter, but the Angels continued to shackle Jones, who was 0 of 14 from the field in the first half, and their advantage had increased to five at the interval.

The third quarter served up more of the same, as Haringey repeatedly edged away only for Manchester to claw their way back, and the margin was unaltered going into the final period.

The Angels huge size advantage in the paint was beginning tell, and they hit the opening six points of the fourth quarter, to lead 42-54, but another Bardsley "trey" began another Mystics' run, of nine points, to 51-54, and with around three minutes to play they were back to within one, 57-58, on the back of a Stoddart "3" and a Jones 1 of 2 from the stripe.

Manchester were covering every inch of the court, as they chased the ball, to deny Haringey any easy chances, but the defending champions retained their composure, to score eight of the last eleven points, and to inflict the first defeat of the season, in all competitions, on the Cup holders.

"Three titles in a row, and three teams here this weekend; that'll do for me" commented a delighted head coach, Daniel Bowmaker as his team celebrated their achievement.

Semi Finals

Nottingham Wildcats (31, 39, 54, 68) 68

Haringey Angels (10, 33, 50, 68) 78

after overtime

Haringey Angels overcame the handicap of a 21-point first quarter deficit to outscore Nottingham 10-0 in overtime, to reach their third under-16 final in five years, led by Renee Johnson-Allen with an incredible treple-double of 19 points, 10 rebounds and 10 steals..

Nottingham shaded the early exchanges, to lead 14-7, but then, following a Haringey Time-Out the Wildcats' offence really went to work, pouring in 17 unanswered points, with captain Lucy Fish leading by example with 12 points, including three strikes from beyond the arc. Only a Josephine Salmon "3" in the dying seconds saved the Angels from the humiliation of being restricted to single figures, but even so, with a 21 point margin, the game seemed already out of the Londoners' reach.

The result appeared even more secure as Nottingham hit the first four points of the second quarter, to lead by 25, but then Haringey staged an incredible recovery, hitting ten unanswered points as the start of a 4-23 run, ending with a Kat Makgobe buzzer-beating "trey", to leave themselves trailing by just six at the half!

With the game now back in the balance, the margin remained around the four to six point mark through the third quarter. Haringey closed to within two, at 52-50, in the closing minute, but Hannah Shaw kept cool at the line to sink 2 of 2, and the Wildcats denied the Angels a scoring opportunity for the remaining 12 seconds, to lead by four going into the final stanza.

A spurt by the Wildcats, to 61-52 seemed to have put them back in control of the game, but from 63-54 the Angels put together an eleven point unanswered spurt,

Final

Manchester Mystics (15, 37, 54) 71

Haringey Angels (16, 28, 39) 52

There was to be no repeat of Haringey's semi-final heroics, as the exertions of that incredible fightback finally took their toll, as Manchester avenged their defeat in the Under-18 Final, and clinched the title for the third straight year.

There was little to separate the two teams in the first quarter, with the gap between them seldom exceeding a couple of points, and it was the Angels who edged the period by a single point.

Mystics : Kelsi Bardsley 22; Amelia Reynolds 13; Kristy Sheils 13; Charlotte Stoddart 11 (+10 reb.); Kerry Taylor 3; Nicolette Fongleequee 3; Maeve Higham 2; Aimee Garner 2; Charlotte Avery 1; Paige Livingston 1; Chelsea Tensel; Lauren Quigley.

Haringey Angels 72 Ellesmere Port Panthers 38

Angels U16s powered into the National Final Fours with a slick win over the Panthers .A tight opening spell saw the scores level but gradually the no-nonsense home defence began to reduce the visitors to long range hopeful efforts. A brace of ‘treys ‘ from Josephine Salmon plus two jump shots from Renee Johnson-Allen showed that the Angels were a threat from every position. Miriam Seale was dominant under the boards and the home side were ahead 21-6 at the end of the first period. A disjointed second quarter followed as the Panthers recovered their poise whilst the Angels rotated their players. The northern side started the second half in determined manner but further bombs from Salmon and scores from Kat Makgobe and Dominique Pluck moved the home side into a 21 point lead. Panthers stuck to their task but when Angels taller line up returned 4 unstoppable baskets from Tami Fagbenle courtesy of Krystal Charles assists emphasised the difference in class .

Scorers : Johnson-Allen 16 ; Salmon 12 ; Seale 12 ; Fagbenle 10 ; Charles 8 ; Makgobe 6 ; Pluck 2 ; St.Marthe 2; Simpson 2 ; Bello 2

Haringey Angels 70 Birmingham Force 32

Angels u18s booked their place in the National semi finals with a workmanlike performance against the 4th placed northern team. A strong start with Kashmere Joseph and Mary Durojaye dominating the rebounds got the home team off to a flying start and the introduction of Mrashi Karumba soon had the force in foul trouble. A great start to the second half saw Angels ahead by 59-18 despite some indifferent outside shooting . Renee Johnson-Allen had an impressive 7 steals to set up easy scores for Josephine Salmon and Tamique Weekes. The final quarter saw the Angels run their bench and further strong inside play from Miriam Seale and Krystal Charles was enough to keep the Force at bay .

Scorers : Karumba 23 ;Joseph 15 ; Durojaye 14 ; Johnson-Allen 4 ; Weekes 4 ; A.Charles 4 ; Salmon 4 ; K.Charles 2 .

Ipswich Bobcats 19 Haringey Angels 70

Angels moved into the last 8 of the National U 14 play-offs with an emphatic win over the Bobcats who finished second in their conference. An agressive defence soon saw the visitors ahead by 12 as Charlene St.Marthe disrupted numerous attacks with her speed and positioning. Temi Fagbenle rebounded with authority and Angels were able to fast break at will . A great move saw Janice Monakana score courtesy of a screen from Niquelle Latouche and the young Angels oozed confidence as their lead extended to 37-10. A tough third quarter where the home side were contained to a single point confirmed the quality of their defensive play and the game concluded with a smart burst from Chantal Charles who had 10 points and several assists .

Scorers : St.Marthe 17 ; Charles 17 ; Monakana 10 ; Fagbenle 8 ; Lowe 6 ; Latouche 6 ; Scott 2 ; Fatusin 2 ; Joseph 2

Haringey Angels 73 Doncaster Panthers 23

Angels U16s stormed into the National Quarter Finals with a great display based on strong rebounding, fine shooting and fast break basketball. The visitors started keenly but with Josephine Salmon making 4 out of 5 long range efforts the Angels led 21-8 at the quarter. The next period was one way traffic as the home defence swarmed all over the Panthers and with Miriam Seale and Krystal Charles dominating both baskets areas and Charlene St.Marthe finishing the fast breaks well the lead stretched to 41-12 at the midpoint. Angels rested all their starters for the third quarter but a great defensive effort from Rachael Bello and Teshna Farquharson frustrated the visitors attack and scores from Shea Simpson moved the home side further ahead. The final quarter was all Miriam Seale as the 6’1” centre forced in 13 points against the toothless Panthers .

Scorers : Seale 24; Salmon 18; St.Marthe 12 ; Charles 8 ; Farquharson 6 ; Simpson 3 ; Makgobe 2

Haringey Angels U16 64 Southend Swifts 63

The home side had to summon every ounce of determination to inflict the first league defeat of the season on the table topping Swifts. The visitors stormed to a 26-15 first quarter lead as they connected with a series of long range efforts whilst Miriam Seale was Angels most effective player with some important rebounds and several scores. Poor teamwork continued to disrupt the Haringey attack and a dismal third quarter saw the Swifts comfortably ahead by 18 points as the final 9 minutes approached. A pressing defence paid immediate dividends as a Johnson-Allen steal and two treys by the previously anonymous Josephine Salmon lifted the home crowd. Two smart drives from Krystal Charles closed the gap to 5 and with the visitors completely rattled two steals from Johnson-Allen and a score by Charlene St.Marthe put the home side ahead with 90 seconds remaining .Angels missed some free throws but once again proved that they can handle pressure by holding on for the win that guarantees them home draws in the play-offs .

Scorers : Johnson-Allen 14 ; Charles 14 ; Seale 14 ; Salmon 8 ; St.Marthe 7 ; Fagbenle 4 ; Farquharson 3

Haringey Angels U18 76 Southend Swifts 47

Angels won the Under18 South league with this comfortable win over Swifts and now have a quarter final draw against Birmingham Force in the play-offs. Swifts played with great spirit and the first quarter finished 21-17 with Angels just ahead. A tremendous display from Mrashi Karumba saw Angels pull right away as she scored with a number of long range efforts and some gravity defying drives to thrill the crowd. With Karumba rested the second half was much quieter as Angels went inside to Kashmere Joseph and Mary Durojaye for their points and a quiet final period with baskets for Bolu Diyaolu and Tamique Weekes saw the home side to victory.

Scorers: Karumba 25 ; Joseph 15 ; Durojaye 9 ; Salmon 8 ; Weekes 8 ; St.Marthe 3; Charles 2 ; Johnson-Allen 2 ; Fagbenle 2 ; Diyaolu 2

Sevenoaks Suns U 18 73 Haringey Angels 72

The clash to decide the winners of the Under 18 south title met all expectations as both teams put on a great display for the spectators. Predicably, the Suns raced into an early lead but a sweet three pointer from Amber Charles saw the Suns lead cut to 4. A ‘trey’ and several assists from Mrashi Karumba kept the visitors in contention but the sharpshooting Suns kept their noses in front to lead by 8 at the half. The second half was all about desire as both sides seemed reluctant to use their bench players and a scoring burst from the dependable Joseph saw the gap close to 3 as the final quarter approached .With the Suns out on their feet Joseph continued her great display with 10 unanswered points and with under 3 minutes to go the Angels seemingly had the game in their pocket. The crucial turning point came when Renee Johnson-Allen was called adjudged to have committed an intentional foul in diving for a loose ball and the made free throws and ball possession seemed to give the Suns new heart. Haringey did not help themselves by fouling on every home shot and with the Suns making 11 out of 13 pressure free throws they pulled into a 5 point lead. Late baskets from Seale and Durojaye reduced the gap to 1 and with 3seconds remaining Mary Durojaye had a free throw to take the game into overtime but could not convert. Although disappointed the Angels know the one point loss means that a home win against 3rd placed Southend Swifts next saturday give them the title.

Scorers : Joseph 24; Karumba 17; A. Charles 13;Johnson-Allen 8 ; Durojaye 8 ; Seale 2.

Sevenoaks Suns U 16 41 Haringey Angels 71

Angels needed to win in emphatic style to set up a crucial finale with the Swifts and they produced a great team display that will give them a lot of confidence. The visitors did not start fluently but their individual skills and rebounding power saw them open a 16-9 first quarter lead. A scrappy period followed with Angels allowing a number of open shots but with Krystal Charles and Temi Fagbenle strong around both baskets the lead stretched to 13. Angels continued to work hard on defence with Kat Makgobe and Saffie Pluck disrupting wherever possible but the visitors needed a burst of scoring from Jo Salmon to maintain their advantage. The final period was all Angels as the Suns could not contain Miriam Seale and Fagbenle who were unstoppable from close range.

Scorers : Fagbenle 17;Seale14;Salmon 10 ;Charles10;Johnson-Allen 6;S.Pluck 4;Bello 4 ;Makgobe 3 ; St.Marthe 2 ;D.Pluck1.
Haringey Angels U14 58 Brentwood Fire 40

Angels secured 3rd place in the league with a workmanlike victory over the Fire .An exciting 15-0 opening burst featured some good aggressive lay ups from Janice Monakana and with Temi Fagbele converting some smart assists from Chantal Charles the home side were able to move ahead by 42-18 at halftime. Anna Delpesh-Lowe and captain Charlene St Marthe were also decisive in their moves to the basket and Angels had the luxury of playing their younger players for the entire second half.Their inexperience showed as they scored only 2 from 16 free throws but positives included some great long range shooting from Shequila Joseph and a made lay up from Jay-ann Harriott despite being fouled .

Scorers: Fagbenle 13 ;Delpesh-Lowe 12 ;Monakana 10 ; Charles 6 ; St.Marthe 5 ; Joseph 5 : Scott 2 ; Latouche 2;Harriott 2

Haringey Angels U16 74 Devon Devils 30

Angels had to much height and power for the Devils who were on their first visit to the Capital .It was not a great performance from the Angels who had to rely on an outstanding performance from Josephine Salmon to keep the Angels offence on track. Apart from her scoring she set up Miriam Seale and Temi Fagbenle for numerous close range shots courtesy of her astute assists. The Devils responded by fouling the shooters in the second half and the tactic worked as the Angels proceeded to miss no less than 20 free throws.Seale and Fagbenle did improve their teamwork as the game continued and an outstanding final quarter saw a 23-7 angels burst as ‘treys’ from Emily Hyland and Salmon piled on the agony for the Devils.

Scorers : Fagbenle 20: Seale 19 ;Salmon 16;Charles 6 ; Monakana 4 ; Makgobe 3; Hyland 3 ; Joseph 2.
U18 vs Chiltern Pumas
A depleted Angels side travelled to Chiltern minus 3 starters ( Karumba, Joseph, Johnson Allen) so recruiting from the younger age group teams, much was expected from the youngsters. They didn’t disappoint sound play by C. St Marthe and the twin power of the Plucks assisted Mary Durojaye to a career high of 46 points, equalling the home sides final tally. After the first quarter the Angels started to settled into a routine which saw the ball fed in to Durojaye and her seamless demolition of the Pumas was unstoppable. Sensible guard play from Amber Charles and Tamiquie Weekes reduced any unforced errors and the Angels cruised to a comfortable victory. 96 -46.

Durojaye 46. 14 Diyaolo 13 Weekes 8 Charles.

London Met league

Haringey Angels beat Omega 83 -38. A fine first quarter performance kept the home side scoreless for the first 5 minutes giving the Angels a 14-0 lead. Excellent movement off the ball by Amber Charles gave her some easy scores and Mary Durojaye had 8 of her 20 points in the first quarter. Omega rallied back with 2 treys and some inside scoring to bring it back 27-14. Not to be outdone by her Barking Abbey school mates Mrashi Karumba stepped up and scored 17 points in the next quarter! With the final result never in doubt Coach Bowmaker was able to experiment with some different defences which kept the home side to 15 points in the final half.
Haringey Angels U18 85 Wandsworth Sting 46

The Angels quickly opened a 13-1 lead courtesy of an Amber Charles three pointer and some close range scores from Mary Durjoaye .The Sting came back into the game courtesy of ex-Angel Josephine Maignanu with 18 first half points but with Mrashi Karumba and Tamique Weekes converting a number of fast breaks the lead stretched to 47-24 at the half. Despite missing a number of free throws the home side continued to pull away as two three point efforts from Josephine Salmon dropped and there was some good mid range scores from Miriam Seale for the crowd to appreciate. The final scoreline was a fair reflection of Angels dominance against a physically tough opponent.

Scorers : Weekes 14; A.Charles 14 ; Durojaye 10 ; Salmon 10 ; Karumba 9 ; Seale 8 ; Johnson-Allen 7 ; K.Charles 6 ; K.Joseph 4 : Makgobe 3

Chiltern Pumas U 16 35 Haringey Angels 75

With a number of players required for other fixtures the Angels squad had an experimental look about it but any fears were soon dispelled with Krystal Charles continuing her excellent recent form with a several and some great assists to Renee Johnson-Allen.With Angels dominating their own rebounds there were many fast break opportunities and a 22-4 second quarter had Angels up 39-11 at the half. The Pumas continued to resist in spirited fashion and the Angels had to look to Rachael Bello and Maya Keyes for a big defensive effort. Temi Fagbenle had her most confident game so far with some nice mid range efforts and with Miriam Seale looking assured with her shooting the visitors had little difficulty improving their advantage .There were pleasing debuts for Chantal Charles and Shequila Joseph who both played with great composure in their first step up to U16 basketball.

Scorers :- Charles 20 ; Johnson-Allen 14 ; Fagbenle 14 ; Seale 10 ; Bello 6 : Salmon 4 : Keyes 4 ; Covell 2

Haringey Angels U18 79 Essex & Herts Leopards 39

The Angels started their heavy pre Easter schedule with a convincing midweek victory over the 4th placed Leopards. Great teamwork between Amber Charles and Mary Durojaye was evident from the outset as Charles rattled up seven assists in the game. With Kashmere Joseph finding plenty of open spaces under the visitors basket Angels were able to increase their lead to 19 points by the half. A renewed effort from the visitors kept the score in check for the 3rd quarter as Angels ran their entire 12 man bench but the home side the produced their best basketball for some time as the team really flowed in the final quarter. Three long range efforts from Jo Salmon touched nothing but net and with Mrashi Karumba connecting on 8 out of 9 shots the scorers were struggling to keep up. Tamique Weekes converted several of her own steals and with Johnson-Allen and Krystal Charles giving nothing away on defence a 28-8 final quarter was no less than the Angels deserved. On this evidence it is unlikely that the leopards will be spotted at the National Finals.

Scorers: Karumba 19 ; Durojaye 16; Joseph 15 ; Salmon 9 ; Weekes 8:Johnson-Allen 4; Fagbenle 4: Seale 2 ; Charles 2

Solent Suns  47 Haringey Angels 55

With Solent on a lengthy unbeaten run the Angels had to be at their best to win in front of an intimidating home crowd. The visitors made a great start to the game as the Suns missed a number of shots which enabled the Angels to get their fast break going well to lead 19-4 at the quarter.Krystal Charles proved unstoppable going to the basket with great support from Renee Johnson-Allen who marshalled the team well.Charles continued to impress in the third quarter but fatigue and some costly turnovers allowed the suns to inch their way into the game despite scores from Miriam Seale and Temi Fagbenle. A 15-2 run from the hosts saw the crowd going wild and the Angels had to show all their courage and teamwork to stay ahead. Two made free throws from Seale and a brilliant reverse lay up from Josephine Salmon courtesy of a Charles assist put the team back on track and the final minute was all Angels as Rachael Bello and Teshna Farquharson scores put the Suns out of the game.

U18's
Haringey Angels 89 Westminster Warriors 26

Angels U18’s looked a bit ring rusty as a couple of fixtureless weekends took the edge of their teamwork but with Mary Durojaye taking up some great inside positions the points started to flow and the home side led 19-8 at the quarter. The pace of the game picked up with scores from Kashmere Joseph courtesy of steals by Tamique Weekes and Amber Charles. The lead stretched to 55-17 by the end of the third quarter with the Angels fast break going well courtesy of some high quality passing. The Warriors had little fight left for the final period. Mrashi Karumba blocked several shots and with 5 ‘treys’ dropping the Angels nailed 34 points to emphasise why they have a 100% record in this league . Wandsworth also have a 100% record and they are the visitors next Saturday.

Haringey Angels U14 41 Southend Swifts 75

The home side had great difficulty in containing the Swifts who look to be mounting a strong challenge for the National title. The scoreline remained close for much of the first quarter as the Angels relied heavily on the scoring of Charlene St Marthe who impressed with her strong drives to the basket. Anna Delpesh-Lowe was the only other home player to contribute with some good moves to the basket and gradually the visitors defence got on top as they moved ahead by 16 at the half.Swifts did get into foul trouble but with Temi Fagbenle smothered by a good zone defence it was to Angels credit that they moved within 10 points of the undefeated Swifts. The visitors proved their class with an unanswered 25 point burst and despite good defence from Janice Monakana and sharp passing from Chantal Charles the young Angels team were well beaten.

Scorers : St.Marthe 16 ; Delpesh-Lowe 14 ; Monakana 5 ; Charles 2 ; Fagbenle 2

Brentwood Fire U16 30 Haringey Angels 61

Fire suffered the backlash from Angels disappointing cup final defeat as a blistering first quarter display put the game beyond the home sides reach as Renee Johnson-allen inspired the visitors to open a 26-5 lead. The all action Greig City youngster has been in outstanding form with her no-nonsense defence and all round attacking skills. Fire resorted to a zone defence to slow the scoring rate and as Angels ran their bench players the home side came back in the second quarter. The second half opened with a further burst of Angels scoring courtesy of some great rebounds from Teshna Farquharson and three ‘treys’ from Jo Salmon. Good defensive displays from Kat Makgobe and Krystal Charles capped a fine team performance that showed that the Angels are back on track for a crack at the National Finals in May.

Scorers :Salmon 17 ; Johnson-Allen 15 ; Farquharson 11 ; Charles 6 ; St.Marthe 4 ; Bello 4 ; Hyland 2
